OVERVIEW
To meet the challenges of a career in fire protection, you need training that prepares you with technical knowledge as well as hands-on experience. That is why HTC’s Fire Protection program is designed to provide you with a career ladder educational opportunity beginning with certificates and culminating with a Bachelor of Science concentration in fire science. From the basics of fire suppression, hazardous materials and fire inspection/investigation to the training that prepares you for upper-level chief positions, the program helps you develop the skills to succeed.
LABS AND CLASSROOMS
When you walk into our learning labs at HTC it is like walking into a fire station. We boast four pumper trucks with pumping capacity of over 1200 gallons of water per minute. We also have a 100 foot tower ladder. Our outside lab facilities include a 70 foot high training tower, two car fire props, one propane live fire simulator, two class A live fire simulators, one USAR structural collapse simulator, and numerous ventilation and fire simulators.
SUPPLIES/TOOLS
Our students are uniform in appearance.
The program requires several items to meet this requirement:
An HTC fire program t-shirt, blue uniform pants, black uniform belt, and black uniform shoes or boots.
If students are not affiliated with a local fire department, there is a rental fee of $100 for structural firefighting gear.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment of a firefighter is physically demanding. It could be hot or cold, stressful, and mentally challenging. From carrying equipment to pulling hose lines full of water to pulling walls and ceilings apart. Students will work inside structures that are on fire and high above the ground, cutting apart roofs in order to ventilate a fire. The work environment is ever-changing and challenging.
